Customer Review: The night he came home
I only wish I could add John Carpenter's theme music to this review. Between the hackle-raising menace of that, and the looming presence of Michael Myers everywhere but in full view, Halloween has been stood firmly at the top of my all-time horror list for decades.
It is ironic that this is the movie credited with setting the tone for the series of slasher flicks that followed. The success of Halloween lies in what it does not show, rather than what it does. The hulking figure of Myers is always at the corners of vision -- outside a window, or in the shadows across the street. We never see the knife blade plunge into flesh. Instead, Carpenter gives us just enough and forces a viewers imagination to do the rest.
For the three or four people who have not yet seen this horror classic, I'll describe it briefly: A 6-year-old boy inexplicably stabs his older sister to death on Halloween night. For more than a dozen years, he waits in silence at an asylum, waiting for some unseen signal to set him in motion again. That happens on Halloween night in 1978, when a quite grown up Myers returns to his Haddonfield home to stalk the teenage girls who serve as mirrors of his long gone sister.
You never see Myer's face, but for one small moment during the tense and terrifying final act. He is a silent killer who is there one moment and gone the next. Jamie Lee Curtis, in her film debut, quickly earns the scream queen title. Donald Pleasance is stellar as the harried, rattled psychiatrist who knows what evil is really stalking Haddonfield.
"This isn't a man," he tells the town sheriff in a gore crow voice.
He's right. Myers is the original horrific killer who keeps getting up when he is supposed to be dead. Halloween is edge-of-your seat fright and it's a movie that should be watched every year when the big night rolls around. It's my favorite of them all. I cannot carve a pumpkin or watch costumed children roaming the streets without humming Carpenter's chilling music in my head. Best horror movie ever, best horror movie theme. I'll stake my bag of candy on it.

jamie lee curtis,donald pleasence,and a william shatner mask make for one of the best horror movies ever made.and after all these years the shine on this littlr gem is still just a bright as when it first came out.
given the job to make a movie about babysitters being attacked by a knife welding killer, john charpenter and debra hill(long time friends and one time lovers) fashioned this great if slight story of michael mayers who kills his sister in 1963 and escapes 18 years later from a nuthouse and goes back home to kill again.mr. pleasence is great as michael's doctor who see's the stoping of michael is his duty, andso he sets out to do just that. jamie lee curtis(daughter of tony curtis and janet leigh) is the intended victim of the killer now refered to as the shape.charpenter also gave the movie the music score and it is among the best scores in any movie. with all these elements the movie just caught lighting in a bottle and started the slasher craze that is still with us today.
this is one that everyone needs in their collection!!!!!
