Customer Review: Excellent, exciting and interesting...
I read this book after I visited Gloucester last year and had a chance to read F/V Black Sheep before it was published, in it the author talks about drinking in a bar with Sully so it was interesting to be able to get this book and read about what happened to him. Gloucester fishermen sure lead tough lives. This is a very exciting book with lots of details and information about what their lives are like. I'll probably read it again.
Customer Review: A haunting sea
This is a gripping book that kept me awake many nights when the winds would push the rain against my bed room windows. They say that the New England weather is unpredictable and having lived in Massachusetts for almost 15 years I can only agree. Storms can build so fast that a sunny picnic can quickly turn into a washed out event. In fact, I remember this "Perfect storm" happening in October of 1991. It happened the day of Halloween and it rained and rained and rained. The sky was so dark and the wind was roaring like a true Nor'easter. Given my location and own personal experience of this storm, I feel very attached to this story.
Junger has done exquisite research before writing this story. He visited Gloucester, the fishing town where most of the sailors lived, interviewed the people that knew them and researched the path of the storm and its effects. From hundreds of personal interviews, reviews of weather maps and newspaper articles, Junger is able to distill the most important aspects and presents his readers with a well-written and haunting book that details the events of this "Perfect storm". Each crew member comes to live in Junger's writing and the reader gets a glimpse into their daily life, meets their families and friends and gets to know their personalities. We leave the harbor with the crew and join them on their path to the fishing grounds, feeling excitement for the haunt and hope for a good catch.
While the story centers around the six crew members of the Andrea Gail and their plight, the book also offers its readers an inside into the fishing business, small town life and many scientific facts around the creation of storms and their effect on the ocean. (At times, I was reminded of "Moby Dick", where Melville offers his readers many lengthy descriptions of whale hunting and the theory of sailing.) This tangential information supports the main events of the book and helps to illustrate what took place 500 miles off the coast. We learn about life in Gloucester, visit local bars and walk down main street towards the harbor, where all the boats are tied up. We also learn about what makes a storm a "perfect storm", how high the waves were, what the path of the storm is and finally how it must feel to drown.
As a reader I was drawn into the events and often found myself unable to put the book down. Tragic in its outcome, Junger's novel serves as memory to the many people who lost their lives in the ocean and is a wonderful way to remember the six crew members of the Andrea Gail and their quest to bring a boat full of fish back to Gloucester.
