Scary Stories: Frightening Tales for Halloween

Scary Stories: Frightening Tales for Halloween Here's a Halloween treat of historic proportions. Where else can you get Nelson Olmstead's manic voice tripping through Poe's "Pit and the Pendulum"? Or, better still, Boris Karloff reciting "The Vampire Sleeps" with just enough chill in his voice to tingle the spine? Relying on four Poe tales--all but "Shadow" read by Olmstead--Scary Stories is great for fright night, and ideal for bellowing out a window for the neighbors. It's also grand to play in a collage atmosphere, as background, say, for New Wave Halloween or a crazed sound-effects display like Halloween Horror: Scary Sounds from the Hex Files. Of course, it's also a good item for teachers of literature looking to drive home the eeriness of Poe to a seventh- or eighth-grade class. Sound effects occur with wide spaces between them, economical enough not to impede the enjoyment of these dark, gloomy texts. --Andrew Bartlett

Customer Review: Scary stuff, huh, kids?
This CD features seven "scary" stories. They are all pretty good, although they didn't really scare me. Nelson Olmstead gives good readings of three Edgar Allan Poe short stories. The Poe story read by James Mason is not quite as effective. Boris Karloff is, of course, great. And Jackie Torrence gives an effective reading of "The Golden Arm". The weirdest story here is "Berenice" by Brother Theodore. If you ever saw Theodore's live act, you know he is a strange guy. The story here is typical of his live performances, and I'm guessing he wrote it himself, although the CD has no writing credits. This is a good CD to get if you are looking for a collection of spoken word horror stories.

Customer Review: An excellent variety of frightening narratives!
Not your usual horror recording, which ordinarily consists of some Poe stories or mildly frightening children's tales. The most appealing feature of these selections are the narrators, which include Boris Karloff and Theodore, who sounds convincingly psychotic. Jackie Torrance, known mainly for children's recordings, is also vividly gifted. I would not recommend this collection for children under the age of 12. There are some disturbing aspects to the tales, including death and madness.

While All Souls Day is the most popular time of year to buy any sort of costume today more and more individuals (especially youngesters) and enjoying costumes any time of year. One popular way to do just that is to throught costume parties. Costume parties are fun not only for the children but for parents as well. College students also have been known to get caught up in costume fun.

While a large amount of people prefer to get their silly costumes on the web, perhaps this year you rather create your own "homemade" halloween costume instead. At Halloween-Blog.com we say "That's the spirit! Creating you're own costume is fun, creative and will often yield a costume that is more cost effective than a store purchased version. Remember to start early, often times people try to create their own costume far too late. I often start the process by coming up with three "costume ideas" that I would enjoy each year. Then you can shop your local flea markets with those ideas in mind as you search for items that will work well for your costume.
