STILL THE DEFINITIVE FRANKENSTEIN AFTER 75 YEARS:
As 2006 dawns, this film is still the definitive film version of Shelley's classic tale of horror and tragedy. "Frankenstein" created a new icon of terror and a star out of character actor Boris Karloff. The movie's potency is derived from the moody, dank atmosphere created by Director James Whale.
WHALE HAD THE AID OF A GREAT TEAM:
Whale found excellent collaborators. Herman Rosse famous for his set designs created the other-worldly-esque, gothic watchtower laboratory. Kenneth Strickfaden designed the electrical equipment for the lab. Jack Pierce, was the make-up artist who sculpted the monster's trademark look. To do this required Karloff to wear prosthetic facial make-up and "frankenstein boots" wieghted down with asphalt to induce the monster's ungainly lurching gait. Then of course there was the monster -Karloff, who gave a truly sympathetic performance as the tormented, confused and abandoned creature.
ABOUT THIS VHS VERSION OF "FRANKENSTEIN":
The scene where he throws the little girl in the water after he ran out of little flowers to toss in, and then watch floating in the water has been restored. By restoring this scene, we can see that the "monster" did not mean to harm the child, and was totally freaked out by the outcome, and ran away not knowing what to do. So of course the monster returns home to see his daddy - just in time for dad to lead a search party with dogs, torches, and rifles to hunt the poor monster down.
BOTTOM LINE:
The story is more about the behavior of an innocent being that is manifest from its abandonment combined with mistreatment and cruelty for no good reason.
