The Witch's Walking Stick

The Witch's Walking Stick Poor Margaret is waking up to another bad day. Ever since her parents died, her brother and sister have made her sweep the floors, chop the wood, cook the meals, feed the pigs, and anything else they can think to demand. Selfish, mean, and twice as big as Margaret, they always get their way. When at last Margaret has had enough, she runs away into the forest. Just as she is wondering how she will survive, she comes upon an old lady with a very sad story: a dog has run off with her walking stick, and she can't do a thing without it. When the old lady promises Margaret a reward of three gold coins for its safe return, the girl readily agrees. Little does Margaret know that the old lady is really a witch, her reward a trick, and her walking stick a magic stick the witch has used to make a thousand miserable wishes come true . . .

Customer Review: What would you do if you found a magic walking stick in the forest?
In former days, which is to say "Once upon a time," there was a very old witch who had a magic walking stick, which she had used over the years to make a thousand miserable wishes come true. But it seems there is only so much magic in such walking sticks, and now it has just a little bit of magic left in it. However, this does not stop the witch from turning birds into bats or whatever else she thinks is amusing, which would be wasting what little magic remains. Anyway, one day the old witch sees this dog and when she shakes her walking stick to turn him into a cat, the dog grabs the stick, making the mistake of thinking the woman wanted to play. So when she starts shrieking at the dog he runs away, with the stick still in his mouth.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the forest a young girl named Margaret is having another bad day. Her older brother and her older sister are twice as big as she is and always ordering her around. This is how things have been ever since their parents passed away, and after her siblings force her to make breakfast, Margaret decides to run away. In the woods she finds the old witch, who tells her about the dog that ran off with her walking stick. Offering a reward of three shiny gold coins, the old witch gets Margaret to look for the spotted dog with the walking stick. Of course Margaret finds the dog and the crooked old stick, and when she wishes she knew why an old piece of wood like that is worth three gold coins, she discovers she knows why. Then she decides to borrow the magic stick for an hour or so.

Written and illustrated by Susan Meddaugh, "The Witch's Walking Stick," could simply turn into a revenge tale. After all, anybody who has older brothers or sisters would probably like to get back at them for a long list of injustices, perceived or otherwise. All things considered, Margaret lets her older brother and sister off pretty easy. But she gets points for not taking advantage of the situation, for improving her own situation without going overboard, and also for being smart enough to make sure she is covered down the road. Now it might be too subtle a point, and I may well be reading too much into this charming little story, but I think that last wish Margaret makes is more substantial than we might think at first (the last wish being with regards to her siblings and not the wish mentioned on the last page, which I do not think was granted by the magic walking stick). The appeal of this book might be restricted to the youngest reader in a family, but they will certainly appreciate the impulse. Hopefully they will also understand the lesson.

Customer Review: Cute, funny fairy tale
My 5-1/2 year old and 4 year old boys loved this story and asked me to read it to them again and again immediately after listening to it the first time. FYI - - It was one of more than 20 books on our school's reading award list for Kindergarten - 2nd graders. Very engaging and entertaining. Good lessons about being kind/good vs. being mean/evil. A dog snatches a witch's magic walking stick, and the witch asks a girl to get it back for her. The girl had been mistreated at home by her older siblings since their parents died. Caveats: I did not like the fact that it mentioned that the parents' died, although it was just in passing, so I edited it to say the parents were not there. It is also worth pointing out to others who may be concerned that the girl runs away from home. I edited that out, too. I just don't like bringing up subjects unnecessarily. I said she left her home and left it vague as to how long she was planning to stay away. I know, I know ... but, I'm sorry, I'm just not reading that to my children. Nevertheless, we loved the story.
