The Chase Candy Company, maker of Cherry Mash, dates back to 1876, the year the United States celebrated its first century. It was a year of historical moments, with Alexander Graham Bell demonstrating the first telephone, and General George Armstrong Custer meeting the Sioux at Little Big Horn. Dr. George Washington Chase was making history of his own by initiating what would be the Chase Candy Company in St. Joseph, Missouri.
Chase first invented in 1918, and consisted of a soft cherry center with real maraschino cherries, a topping of chopped roasted peanuts, and a chocolate coating. Chase Candy Company initially called the candy Cherry Chase, then Cherry Chaser, and finally Cherry Mash.
The Candy Company went through times of upheaval throughout the decades, surviving wars, depression, rounds of acquisition and then spin offs. Through it all Cherry Mash has been one of the company's best-selling products. The company's web site states that Cherry Mash is the company's best selling product today. Also, the company remains in St. Joseph, Missouri, where the company has built a new factory.
When you bite into a Cherry Mash you initially taste the chocolate, but then the intense cherry flavor hits. The cherry flavor is quite sweet and very powerful. Then you encounter the peanut crunch, which gives the candy bar an interesting follow up to the chocolate and cherry flavor. Some people do not care for Cherry Mash because the combination of cherry and sugar is very powerful. This candy is not by any stretch of the imagination mild.
I have enjoyed Cherry Mash since I was a child. However, I am unable to eat the full size Cherry Mash because that much sugar at once is a bit overwhelming. I prefer the smaller Mini Mash over the 2.05 ounce Cherry Mash.
