Halloween

Halloween Halloween is as pure and undiluted as its title. In the small town of Haddonfield, Illinois, a teenage baby sitter tries to survive a Halloween night of relentless terror, during which a knife-wielding maniac goes after the town's hormonally charged youths. Director John Carpenter takes this simple situation and orchestrates a superbly mounted symphony of horrors. It's a movie much scarier for its dark spaces and ominous camera movements than for its explicit bloodletting (which is actually minimal). Composed by Carpenter himself, the movie's freaky music sets the tone; and his script (cowritten with Debra Hill) is laced with references to other horror pictures, especially Psycho. The baby sitter is played by Jamie Lee Curtis, the real-life daughter of Psycho victim Janet Leigh; and the obsessed policeman played by Donald Pleasence is named Sam Loomis, after John Gavin's character in Psycho. In the end, though, Halloween stands on its own as a uncannily frightening experience--it's one of those movies that had audiences literally jumping out of their seats and shouting at the screen. ("No! Don't drop that knife!") Produced on a low budget, the picture turned a monster profit, and spawned many sequels, none of which approached the 1978 original. Curtis returned for two more installments: 1981's dismal Halloween II, which picked up the story the day after the unfortunate events, and 1998's occasionally gripping Halloween H20, which proved the former baby sitter was still haunted after 20 years. --Robert Horton

Customer Review: "See anything you like?" Halloween (1978)
When John Carpentar got the job of directing a horror picture for Irwin Yablans, he had no idea that it would launch his career. HALLOWEEN did not redefine horror, that title goes only to select few, but it did rejuvinate it.

Basically everyone knows the story, but for those of you who don't, I'll keep the summary simple. A mental patient escapes, and stalks and kills teenage babysitters on Halloween night. That's all there is to it, but what Carpenter did effectivily is he created a tension from the very beginning and kept it till the end.

The acting is very good in this movie, better than would be suspected in a horror movie. Jamie Lee Curtis is very believable as the virgin, and you root for her throughout the film.

In Anchor Bay's 2-disc release of Halloween for the 25th anneversary of the film, they came out with great bonus features. A feature length audio commentary with John Carpentar, Debra Hill, and Jamie Lee Curtis. Carpentar's commentary is clevar and interesting. I was looking forward to Jamie discussing the movie, but she didn't really add any interesting comments.

The making of feature, which lasts 87 minutes, is very informative on all the hard work that made this picture great.

Overall, Halloween is an above average picture. The mood, the acting, and the music are all excellant. The story was weak, but that does not in any way hurt this film. We had seen the story before in Pyscho.

John Carpentea's Halloween is a film not to be missed. He has created a very entertaining horror movie that set the standard for the next 25 years of horror.

Customer Review: HALLOWEEN 1978 "THE NIGHT HE CAME HOME" REMEMBERING THE START OF THE AGE OF GORE!
THIS MOVIE STARTED IT ALL, AND EVERY SLASHER FLICK THERE AFTER. THERE WOULD BE MANY HALLOWEEN SEQUALS. REALLY THE ONLY GOOD SEQUAL WAS HALLOWEEN 2. THE ORIGINAL HALLOWEEN WILL ALWAYS BE THE CLASSIC, I FEEL HALLOWEN 2 WAS A BIT MORE SEPTIC, COLD AND GORY AND FAST PACED, OVERALL THE HALLOWEEN 2 SOUNDTRACK WAS BETTER. HALLOWEEN WILL ALWAYS BE FAMILIAR WITH THE PUBLIC EVEN IF THEY HAVE NEVER SEEN THE MOVIE, THEY HAVE HEARD OF IT. CARPENTERS SOUNDTRACK IS A WORK OF MUSIC GENIUS (NOT JUST THE MAIN TITLE). THE MOVIE HAS AGED A BIT THE SHOCK VALUE HAS GONE AND IT IS A LITTLE CAMPY. THIS MOVIE WILL ALWAYS BE A WORK OF CINEMATIC ENGINUITY AND ART. CARPENTER AND DEBRA HILL MADE THE MOST OF THERE $320,000 INVESTMENT. HALLOWEEN IS ENJOYABLE AND KEEPS YOU GOING, YOU THE VIEWER GET INTO THE FLICK. I HAVE SEEN IT MANY TIMES AND WILL MANY MORE TIMES. ANCHOR BAY AGAIN AS WITH (MANIAC 1980)HAS DONE AN INCREDIBLE JOB WITH THE ORIGINAL FILM AND SOUNDTRACK TRANFER. EXCELLENT HIGH DEFINITION DIVIMAX VIEWING FOR YOUR VIEWING PLEASURE. THERE MOST LIKELY WILL BE A 30TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION, BUT THIS 25TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION WILL BE ALL YOU NEED. THE EXTRA BONUS MATERIAL DVD IS A TREAT IN ITSELF FOR THE HORROR MOVIE FAN OR THE FILM STUDENT. ENJOY THE HALLOWEEN 25TH ANNIVERSARY DVD DIVIMAX EDITION, IT IS WORTH THE MONEY TO OWN. "THE NIGHT HE CAME HOME"
