WCW Halloween Havoc 1993
WCW Halloween Havoc 1993
Customer Review: An enjoyable event.
I wouldn't say this PPV is very overrated. It's not the greatest in the world, but it's certainly not the worst either.
First off, the show begins with a 1993-era WCW PPV mini movie that aired during or to hype their PPVs during this time. While it did not work with other things, such as Cactus Jack's segements of being lost with amnesia or Sting and The british Bulldog's boat being blown up by a little person who was paid by vader and Sid Vicious, I feel that it did work here simply because it was a silly little Halloween vignette that set up the feel for the show. Seeing Tony Schiavone trying to act scary is indeed worth a look, lol. We also get to see Eric Bischoff dressed up as General Custard. Tony Schiavone and Jesse The Body Ventura are on commentary for this event.
This PPV has 8 matches and believe it or not they're all on this VHS. Any of you fans who watch WCW videos from the early 90's know what I mean there.
1 Ice Train/Charlie Norris/The Shockmaster vs. Harlem Heat/The Equalizer. The Equalizer went on to become Dave Sullivan, if that'll give you a better impression of who he is. Of course The Shockmaster is infamous for botching a WCW skit where he fell through a screen and lost his storm trooper helmet. Other wrestlers were laughing on the air, it wasn't good. neither was this match. This match really shouldn't have even been on the card. It's your classic filler match to open up the show. This one probably should have been cut to tell you the truth.
2 Ricky Steamboat vs. Paul Orndorff. This match was pretty good I thought. It was a nice legends type of a match.
3 WCW Television Title: Lord Steven Regal vs. The British Bulldog. This was a good match, but I was disappointed with the finish of the match.
4 WCW U.S. Title: Dustin Rhodes vs. Stunning Steve Austin.
This was a very good match I thought. I think one thing Austin's WCW tenure showed was that he was a much better wrestler in WCW than he was in the WWF when he reached his peak as Stone Cold. Much less predictable and very quick on his feet. This was a very fast paced match and both men gave what seemed to be 100%.
5 WCW Tag Team Titles: Marcus Bagwell/2 Cold Scorpio vs. The Nasty Boys. This was a decent match. The Nast Boys had just returned to WCW not too long before this after being among a number of talents that walked out on the company for the WWF in the early 90's. When they came back, they immediately got a title push. They went however into this event as the challengers after losing their belts to Bagwell and Scorpio one night earlier on WCW TV. The fans seemed to really like Bagwell and Scorpio, but they never really caught on.
6 Sting vs. Sid Vicious. Just like The Nast Boys, Vicious had just returned to WCW after finding out the WWF didn't treat him as well as he thought. Of course, WCW brought him back in with open arms and gave him the push. This match disappointed me. It was too short and neither he or Sting really looked like their timing was on. This was a rematch of sorts from Halloween Havoc 1990, where Sting and Vicious did battle for the WCW Title.
7 WCW International Title: Rick Rude vs. Ric Flair. This was in my opinion the best match on the card. This was at a time where both the WCW Title and WCW International titles were on WCW TV. The International Title was not recognized bu WCW in the U.S., however when WCW was abroad, it was recognized as an official world title. The ending was all wrong I thought, but this match was really good.
8 Spin The Wheel, Make The Deal/Texas Death match: Vader vs. Cactus Jack. This one was okay I thought, but could have been SO much better. The WCW Title was not on the line in this match, which takes some intrigue away from it I think. Tony said the belt was not Jack's motivation. This one was another match that was too short. WCW always had a practice of making their featured matches be shorter than their mid card. I never really liked that. The ending was pretty ordinary and plain I thought. But, it was still okay.
Overall, I liked this PPV. I certainly don't think it was a failure. It could have been better I think. The card was up to par, but the endings of a lot of the matches were pointless and should have been better planned and thought out. I do think it flows nicely and if you can find it for a fair price, pick it up and you'll enjoy it I think.
Customer Review: I agree very overrated
8 matches 4 title matches every major star you can think of at the time and yet this PPV fails. First match Shockmaster/Indian guy VS Harlem Heat/Equalizer- complete waste of time and you'll wanna fast forward Tugboat's fat ass. Next Match Steamboat VS Orndorff- Classic match that ends in a stale way watch it and you will agree. Next up is the TV title match between Regal and the Bulldog. I love the Bulldog and why did he never get a WCW title? Great match with another stale ending. Austin VS Rodes US title-
These two fought at Havoc 91 and here they go again, decent match with an acutal winner. Scorpio/Bagwell VS Nastys for the Tag titles- this might be the best match of the night, excellent wrestling by both teams. Sting VS Sid also these two fought at Havoc 90 and they have anoher solid match 2gether, too short though. Next is Flair VS Rude for the real world title- Solid match wrestling by both but this is another match with a stale ending. I can watch any match with Rude in it. Next is the dreaded main event. It was supposed to be a death match but there are no 30 second rest periods in a death match. The match was also very sloppy not by Foley but by Vader, he looked terrible that night. Kinda surprising that he was the champ.
Dumb ending to top off a wasted night that could have been so much better. Luckilly Jesse the Body does the commentating saving this PPV from complete disaster. It's not worth 50 bucks, only 20-25 the most
