Finding Some Creepy Locals On Halloween

Halloween is the perfect time to visit the places that are considered to be officially “haunted”. Maybe there’s a local “haunted house” legend in your town, or in a location near by. If you’re planning to travel this Halloween season, then here are a few places that you’ll definitely want to visit.

People throughout the U.S. report paranormal activity on a daily basis. Apparitions have appeared in many locations, to many different people, throughout the years. Television shows have catered to paranormal stories and so have books. But most of those stories are mere fiction, right? Fright sells, it’s all a hoax. Wrong! Some of the most famous "haunted" places didn't get labeled that way for no reason. It’s not a matter of what “sells” when it comes to these Top Scariest Places in the U.S.A.

One of the scariest locations in the U.S.A. is Gettysburg, PA, scene of the Battle of Gettysburg which occurred in the summer of 1863. By the end of the bloody three day conflict, the battlefield was strewn with the corpses of soldiers from both sides. Overwhelmed by the number of bodies, it took several weeks for them all to be removed and buried.

Now those restless spirits from a war long ago fought can be seen walking, fighting and dieing again and again on those same battlefields. And guests visiting the "Devil's Den," and the Farnsworth House on Baltimore Street report strange apparitions of Civil War soldiers, riders on horseback, and "long-haired" cowboys. Some people claim that they've captured the ghosts on film! Is Gettysburg the scariest U.S. location? You be the judge! But first, read about this next location.

If you live anywhere near San Jose, California, you might want to visit the Winchester Mansion this Halloween. Built by Sarah Winchester, heir of the Winchester rifle estate, the Winchester Mansion was constructed over a period of forty one years!

Sarah Winchester, a believer in the occult, was advised by her psychic to move to California from Connecticut. According to Sarah's psychic, the Winchester family was cursed and only by moving far away could the curse be kept at bay. Sarah believed it all because after the death of both her baby and husband, a curse was as good of an explanation as any. The bad spirits would follow her, Sarah's psychic said, but they wouldn't harm Sarah provided that she continued building on to her new home until the day of her death. Sarah obeyed.

Today the Winchester mansion has stairs which lead to blank walls and doors which open to nothing. There are twenty-five bedrooms and chimneys with no matching fireplaces. Sarah Winchester died in her sleep at the age of eighty three and, of course, the Winchester Mansion was never fully developed. Sometimes, especially during a full moon, visitors claim to catch a glimpse of Sara Winchester’s ghost as it moves from room to room, dead end to false passage, admiring the handiwork which kept the Winchester family curse at bay.

If the Winchester Mansion didn’t do it for you, then perhaps nearly the entire city of Savannah, GA, often called “The most haunted city in America”, will be more to your liking. With so many reportedly haunted homes, restaurants, shops and hotels in the city, there is an official “Haunted Places Guide Map” available which can help you plan your visit.

Be sure to visit the Hampton-Lillibridge house which was said to be so “infested” with spirits that the owners had an exorcism performed to rid the house of as many spooks as possible. Some still remain. There are so many delightfully spooky locations to visit in America’s Most Haunted City that you can take a guided tour!
